The first chapter: Stories of human and machine.

When I was about to complete this book with the last human refinement, there was a sudden news coming on weekend regarding the first CEO of OpenAI - the creator of chatGPT.

It was a week on Asian-Pacific Economic Conference at San Francisco with national leaders coming from around the world. In a Friday afternoon, the management board fired him announced by the Chief Scientist. The President departed with some key researchers. The CTO became an interim CEO.

On the internet and social media, there were a ton of conversations about the past, the present and the future of OpenAI and its CEO. Mostly were buzzes and guesses about “what” and “why”. I also asked another Large Language Model to help me explain this situation. It gave me five paragraphs after a three sentence prompts.

For this book, my best offer for readers is an independent narrative based on evidences. I start with generative AI as a PhD dropout early 2015. It is a half year before OpenAI. Instead of going big, I make several small bets. When they failed, I keep pushing. Some of them work ridiculously. It is how I move a progress until the public knew about Mid-journey, Stable Diffusion, and the most famous ChatGPT.

Most of the book here is written based on my journal from 2022 till mid 2023. They look more like a stand-up comedy more than a memoir. Some are documents of the first moment and the first thoughts on several crisis in the tech world, especially how it’s unfolded. Plus, some are my past that helps me jump into those accidentally.
